Are wrought iron gates in nyc just a trend?

I have been seeing a lot more wrought iron gates in nyc lately.  I am not sure if the increase in wrought iron gates is due to a trend in nyc.  I myself like the way the wrought iron gates look and would like one on our nyc property.  Both of the homes on each side of us currently have wrought iron gates on their nyc property. It would look great it we had a one also. As it looks now, our home looks out of place next to the homes with iron gates.
